This here is a grail piece for a San Francisco Mint ingot collectors. The "Type 3" Logo is a descriptor for a large, oversized logo that randomly popped up on mint ingots in the 1940s and 1950s. Often they are found in pieces (half here, half there) scattered across the reverse sides of sheared ingots. They are unusual to find complete and centered like this one. Frankly, even the 40.95oz size of this ingot is very odd - most sheared examples came between 20-30oz. I think the mint cut a larger bar and therefore wanted a larger logo to be clear - they used the Type 3 stamp instead of the more common Type 2. Assay bar collecting has ebb'd and flowed in the last couple of years, but this is a piece that will fit a very special hole that a collector has been waiting to fill.
