Only 750 of these were minted just after the US civil war. Today there are only 2 finer specimens graded at PCGS for this particular date. The famous 3 cent nickel was produced to faciliate purchases of stamps at 3 cents each. The mint made proof versions in order to satisfy the wants of collectors.
