The American Civil War (1861-1865) is a favorite period for collectors of US coins. So much was happening and so much was at stake. Control of US mints was changing hands (e.g. New Orleans, Dahlonega, Charlotte) and some provisional coinage was created so briefly. Currency and coins were needed to support purchasing by the Union government. Money was essential to maintaining the economy and supplying troops with supplies. Many commanders know that logistics is what wins wars and supply lines are essential - supported by nothing other of course than hard US currency. Finding silver dollars from this era isn't easy, let alone in mint state condition. This coin is from 1863, deep in the middle of the darkest days of the war. How this coin has made itself in such preservation to us today in 2025 is both a mystery and product of fortunate chance. Nearly a gem grade, here's a MS64+ coin with nice peripheral toning from an album. In fact, this coin probably belongs in an album for a choice example of the type from a very difficiutl period history both economically, politicallly and for coin collecting.
