Clark, Gruber & Co is considered to be the most successful minter of gold in the Pikes Peak region pf Colorado, although their building was actually set in Denver. It is said they processed more than $2000 of gold dust daily, fashioning these coins amongst 9 other varieties, some of which weighed more than their federal counterparts and we thus preferred by merchants. In total, it is estimated that Clark, Gruber & Co produced more than $3 million in coinage. This is a truly wonderful piece as the obverse image is crisp and clear for the eye, including the "Pikes Peak" title in the headdress of liberty. 1861, being the start of the United States civil war, makes this coin very important from a historical perspective.
