The 1843-D Medium D $5 Half Eagle is pretty typical for Dahlonega mint $5 Half Eagles - mintage of 98,452 coins (one of the highest for the series), but survival rates are abysmally low in better grades. Only about 150 coins exist today in 'About Uncirculated' or better condition. The coin is extremely tough in mint state grades and reaches tens of thousands of dollars. According to PCGS , the coin also often comes well struck and this makes the 1843-D a great type coin for an example from this famous mint from US gold rush history.
